Minggu ni dah 2 kali dengar berita air besar kat waterfall. Pernah nampak depan mata 2 kali, dan hampir2 member jadi mangsa sekali kat Sg Chilling.Tioman flash flood was too strong, says survivor
SINGAPORE, Aug 13 — Johnathan David held on to his girlfriend and her niece as tight as he could, even as a flash flood from a sudden storm poured down on them.
David, 49, Anny Grace Muthu, 46, her nephew Johnathan Johnson, 17, and his sister Amelia Johnson, 19, struggled to keep themselves from getting swept off the edge of an outcrop at a waterfall.
As the waters roared around him, David felt his girlfriend, Anny Grace, go limp.
Then she was gone.
She slipped from his grip and was swept off the rocky outcrop. About 20 minutes later, the other three were swept away too.
Only David and the young man survived the ordeal which happened at a waterfall on Pulau Tioman, Malaysia, early on Monday morning.
Speaking to The Straits Times yesterday before he attended the wake for the two women, Mr David could not stop blaming himself. He said: “I let two lives slip from my hand. The only consolation is the boy. I’ve so many things going through my head, all the what-ifs.”
The four Singaporeans had gone to Tioman last Saturday for a three-day trip that would have ended on Monday.
On Sunday, they trekked to the upper reaches of the Asah Waterfall. It was dark by the time they reached their destination and the group made a “collective decision” to wait until daybreak on the downward sloping outcrop.
Anny had injured her ribs during the trek, and “if we had gone back then, it’d have been dark and very unsafe”, said David.
As they waited, a slight drizzle at 3am eventually became a heavy downpour.
David, a materials and services coordinator, said: “As the rain went into the first hour, I was already worried. I knew what could be coming but I couldn’t do anything.”
His worst fear of being swept off the outcrop came true when streams of water gushed over the rock wall behind them.
David said: “I could hear a roar in the distance. Immediately, I told them to brace themselves. We planted our feet down as best as we could, but the water was so strong it swept us to the edge of the outcrop.” Not long after, he lost Anny.
“I only managed to grab her right hand...all I could do was to scream her name,” he said, adding that he was also gripping Johnson on his left.
The young woman never emerged from the water when they were all swept away.
David said he was “banged around” on what felt like “a ride down a slide”. He eventually found himself next to his girlfriend’s nephew, near two rocks in waist-deep water.
They remained there until the darkness lifted and the rain petered out.
They trekked out of the falls to seek help. A search party comprising policemen and villagers eventually found the bodies of the women....... The Straits Times
